WHY PLACOM WAS ESTABLISHED

Addressing the Gaps in Plateau State's Commodity Economy

The global economy is increasingly driven by sustainable industrial development, food security, climate resilience and organized commodity systems. Plateau State possesses enormous natural resource potential including fertile agricultural land, vast solid mineral deposits, tourism and eco-tourism assets, and strategic geographical advantages.

Despite these opportunities, producers often face challenges such as:

Poor Market Access

Limited connections between producers and profitable domestic and international markets.

Weak Supply Chain Systems

Fragmented aggregation, transportation and distribution infrastructure across the state.

Huge Post-Harvest Losses

Significant commodity wastage between harvest and market, eroding farmer income and food security.

Price Instability

Commodity price volatility leaving farmers and miners exposed to unpredictable income.

Limited Organized Market Access

Lack of structured commodity exchanges and trading platforms accessible to local producers.

Inadequate Storage Infrastructure

Insufficient warehousing facilities across the state, limiting commodity shelf life and market readiness.

PLACOM was established to address these gaps by creating a structured commodity ecosystem that supports production, aggregation, warehousing, processing, marketing and exports — driving inclusive economic growth, strengthening food security and facilitating industrialization through efficient value chain development.
